Medium shrub with narrow, dark green, slightly leathery foliage and tiny male and female flowers borne on separate plants (dioecious), followed by papery winged capsules.
Has attractive foliage and fruits. Can be pruned to maintain shape. Hardy once established.
Indigenous name: BURURR (Wiradjuri)
The durable and tough wood was used for making weapons and tools, as well as house building and firewood. Fruit was used to make red dye.
